The latest incident in strings of violent attacks on New York City subway riders and workers has left a train conductor hospitalized in critical condition and calls for the city to “do something” have grown louder in recent weeks.
Cassandra Sykes, speaking out in the video released by the transit workers union, says her nephew Girard Sykes was slashed on the J train near Fulton and Crescent Streets Wednesday night.
“It is not safe for the transit workers or the public to ride trains or buses,” Skyes said.
A sixth-grade girl brought a gun to her Idaho middle school, shot and wounded two students and a custodian and then was disarmed by a teacher Thursday, authorities said.
The three victims were shot in their limbs and expected to survive, officials said at a news conference. Jefferson County Sheriff Steve Anderson says the girl pulled a handgun from her backpack and fired multiple rounds inside and outside Rigby Middle School in the small city of Rigby, about 95 miles (145 kilometers) southwest of Yellowstone National Park.
A new study estimates that the number of people who have died of COVID-19 in the U.S. is more than 900,000, a number 57% higher than official figures.
Worldwide, the study’s authors say, the COVID-19 death count is nearing 7 million, more than double the reported number of 3.24 million.
The analysis comes from researchers at the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, who looked at excess mortality from March 2020 through May 3, 2021, compared it with what would be expected in a typical nonpandemic year, then adjusted those figures to account for a handful of other pandemic-related factors.
More than half a million people were hospitalized as a result of gun injuries from 2000 to 2016, according to a new study published Tuesday by California-based think tank the RAND Corporation.
The report, part of the group’s Gun Policy in America initiative to measure the impacts of firearm legislation, found that based on data available on gun injuries, roughly 550,000 people were treated for gunshot wounds at hospitals over the 16-year period.

A former South Carolina restaurant manager has been ordered to pay more than $546,000 in restitution to an employee with intellectual disabilities that he put to work for more than 100 hours a week with no pay.
Bobby Paul Edwards, 56 is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for forced labor. He pled guilty in 2019 of enslaving John Christopher Smith, 43, from 2009 to 2014 at J & J Cafeteria in Conway, S.C.
“An executive at Dominion Voting Systems moved to dismiss Newsmax as a defendant in a defamation lawsuit Friday after reaching a settlement with the right-wing media organization,” Business Insider reported Friday. “It’s the first such settlement from a news organization in a defamation lawsuit filed over 2020 election conspiracy theories.”
“Coomer sued Newsmax in December in state court in Colorado over false claims that he took part in an ‘Antifa conference call’ to rig the 2020 presidential election against Donald Trump,” the report explained. “He revised his lawsuit in February to bolster his claims against Newsmax, as Insider previously reported.”

A Pennsylvania cop is under fire for allegedly “racially profiling” a Black man at a diner. The exchange began when the white officer approached the Black man claiming he had been called into the establishment because of him. Posted to social media it has since then gone viral with nearly 1 million views, with many questioning the sobriety of the police official involved.
According to WPXI-TV, Marcus Townsend was eating at G&G Restaurant in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania on April 17 with his girlfriend and their service dog when the police official approached them. “He had just come in and had a problem with the dog at first. He didn’t want the dog in there. He wanted to see service papers,” Townsend told the outlet. “We don’t carry service papers. It’s just not necessary.”
“It was just a big ordeal that he wanted me out of the store, basically that’s what he wanted from the jump,” Townsend told WTAE. “He didn’t want to argue. He already had what he wanted to do in the first place so I was just sitting there taking the rap for the whole mess.”
The officer, identified as William Moore, was allegedly called to the restaurant after someone reported a person smoking marijuana outside. But instead of confirming who that person was or looking for him Moore targeted Townsend demanding he go outside.

Is this what it means to be a Democrat? Manchin behaves like a Republican most of the time. And the Democratic leadership does not call him out for it. Maybe vote-blue-no-matter-who is a bad idea. It’s how we get more Republicans.
A long-shot bid to pass legislation that would make the District of Columbia the nation’s 51st state got a little longer on Friday.
Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia said that he opposes unilateral action by Congress to make the nation’s capital a state and that he believes it needs to be done through a constitutional amendment. He said prior Republican and Democratic administrations thought the same thing.
“They all came to the same conclusion. If Congress wants to make D.C. a state, it should propose a constitutional amendment,” Manchin said in an interview with the West Virginia MetroNews radio network. “It should propose a constitutional amendment and let the people of America vote.”
